When a person is driving on the road, we trust that they will drive safely, with concern for the safety of others around them. Sadly, this isn’t always true and there are an increasing number of distracted driving accidents in New York City being caused by drivers who use of cell phones to talk or text or scroll through their social media feeds while driving.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) statistics show that in 2018, more than 9,500 people were killed by speeding drivers, and close to 400,000 were injured in accidents caused by distracted drivers. Both speeding and distracted driving may be considered acts of reckless driving that are responsible for many accidents in New York.

The conventional view regarding automobile accidents held that they were inevitable, and therefore, safety systems were developed to keep the car driver and the passengers safe. Features such as seat belts and airbags were developed in order to mitigate the risk of a severe injury or fatality in the event of a crash. With advancements in the field of automobile technology, however, it is now possible to prevent accidents from happening in the first place.
