Bronx resident Alison Hugh was left permanently disabled after a botched thigh lift surgery by NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Ferdinand Ofodile. The procedure went wrong with no chance of a corrective surgery either. Hugh sued the surgeon, and a New York jury awarded her $60 million for her pain and suffering, both past and future.
Alison Hugh went to NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Ofodile for thigh-lift surgery but little did she know that Dr. Ofodile had been committing medical malpractice from the get-go and that she was in for irreversible trauma and permanent disability as a result of the upcoming procedure.
Dr. Ofodile, while operating on her, did not use proper and medically acceptable surgical techniques. As such, Hugh was left deformed, and there was no chance of her having corrective surgery to fix the problem.
For Hugh's lawsuit, her lawyer established that Dr. Ofodile had three strikes against him, which made him liable to pay $60 million to Hugh - one of the largest medical malpractice compensations ever to have been ordered for plastic surgery in New York City.
The medical malpractices were as follows:
Strike 1: Dr. Ofodile did not inform Hugh of the risks associated with the kind of surgery she had agreed to have.
Strike 2: Dr. Ofodile did not get Hugh's informed consent for the different aspects of the surgery he was about to perform.
Strike 3: Dr. Ofodile did not use proper surgical techniques during the procedure and deviated from acceptable medical practices.
These medical malpractices left Hugh severely injured, and the labia of her vagina is now permanently deformed. Hugh sued the doctor, and her medical malpractice attorney provided enough evidence that she had gone through considerable pain due to the doctor's mistakes. The jury was unanimous in awarding her $60 million - $10 million for past pain and trauma and $50 million for future suffering.
Although Hugh's disability can never be reversed, her lawyer ensured that she received the compensation she was entitled to and that the doctor was brought to justice in a court of law.
Victims of medical malpractice have to suffer severe trauma and pain for the rest of their lives due to medical negligence from doctors, healthcare personnel, and medical institutions. On top of that, they are left in financial trouble for the rest of their lives.
Unfortunately, medical malpractice is common in NYC hospitals. These malpractices leave dozens of people with life-long disabilities and health complications, besides resulting in many people's death.
