A family in New York was recently awarded $130 million after jurors found that a hospital and its staff members were negligent. The parent’s of a young girl filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center after her 2002 birth left her with cerebral palsy. She reportedly requires a great deal of care as she is unable to walk, write, speak or even swallow on her own.

The young girls’ parents are likely extremely satisfied with the jury’s findings. The award is reportedly the largest malpractice verdict in state history. Despite that, the girl will never live a normal life.

The birth of a child is one of life’s greatest joys. Parents usually do all that they can to ensure that their child will be healthy and safe. They expect that physicians and other medical professionals will take steps to prevent harm during the birthing process.

Sadly, errors made in the delivery room can have a lasting impact on a child’s life. When it can be shown that the injuries were the result of negligence, medical professionals and the hospitals where they work should be held responsible. It may be wise for families who suspect medical negligence to explore their legal options.
