New York City May Be Liable For Deadly Car Crash BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (July 16, 2016)
Authorities have arrested an off-duty New York Police Officer after he caused a fatal car accident with his SUV that left one person dead and seriously injured three other people, according to the New York Post. Authorities have been able to identify the man that was killed in the accident as Andrew Esquivel. The collision took place early Saturday morning when the off-duty cop lost control of his SUV by Bedford Avenue and North Eight Street. The cop drove his car onto the sidewalk after swerving and speeding. One person’s leg was severed and another pedestrian was violently pinned against a fence after the crash. Police were also able to identify a woman that was critically injured in the crash as Divya Menezes. A family member of the victim’s said that at least three of the people that were injured were graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and were currently living in Williamsburg. The two other victims have been identified as Sophia Tabachoun and James Balchaunas. Divya Menezes, Sophia Tabachoun and James Balchaunas were all rushed to the hospital following the accident in order to receive treatment. The accident on Saturday isn’t the first time that an off-duty NYPD officer got drunk and caused mayhem. It is the latest in a long string of incidents. There is a 90 million dollar suit pending against the NYPD after an off duty officer got drunk and viciously attacked a random pedestrian with his service pistol. The man in the incident was nearly killed after being hit with numerous shots. Another man could have very easily died had he not missed the hailstorm of bullets.
