Survey shows heavy reliance on inhalers for asthma patients

New York residents who suffer from asthma are likely to use rescue inhalers on a regular basis. A study by Health Union shows that people may rely too heavily on rescue inhalers, and recommends that asthma patients consider having their condition re-evaluated if they find themselves dependent on their inhalers to get through their days.

Health Union and its website Asthma.net surveyed asthma patients and found that nearly two-thirds of those surveyed experience asthma symptoms at least once a week. Eighty-nine percent of the patients use a rescue inhaler as their most frequent method of treating their asthma attacks.

Asthma affects around 25 million Americans, including some 7 million children. Asthma causes inflammation of the airways, and sufferers can experience coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Many people are misdiagnosed or spend much time going through a series of tests before finally being diagnosed with the condition. More than half of the people who were surveyed by Asthma.net said they would have liked to have had more information about asthma and its triggers. Asthma.net was created as a community and support system for people with asthma. A moderator at the site who is a respiratory therapist said that asthma symptoms can be controlled with proper medication and avoidance of known triggers.

A misdiagnosis of an illness can cause continued or new suffering for a patient as well as delayed treatment, which in turn can lead to a worsened medical condition. People who have been harmed in such a manner may want to discuss their situation with a medical malpractice attorney in order to see if there is any recourse available for seeking compensation for the losses that they have incurred.
