A car accident in New York City may not just ruin a person’s day. It could also leave them with devastating injuries. In some instances, the injuries they suffer may lead to death. So why do so many car accidents
happen on New York City streets? A new poll shows that many New Yorkers blame other drivers.
NY1 recently conducted a survey to determine who people think causes the most accidents. Although bicyclists and pedestrians are blamed by some, the survey shows the majority of New Yorkers blame car drivers. In fact, of the Manhattan residents who were surveyed, close to 60 percent blame drivers.
One survey respondent said that drivers are to blame because they are often distracted. Many drivers are guilty of using their cell phone while driving, changing the radio station or even eating.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,000 people were killed in car accidents due to distracted drivers in 2010. More than 400,000 were injured.
Drivers in New York City and beyond must remain attentive and alert. Sadly, one driver’s reckless behavior can cause heartache and pain for many people.
When people are harmed by negligent drivers, they may be able to pursue legal action. Car accident victims may be able to file a personal injury lawsuit. The compensation they receive can go towards medical bills and to make up for lost wages. In addition, they may seek compensation for pain and suffering and for a diminished quality of life as a result of the accident.
