A new clinic hopes to better improve the lives of those with cerebral palsy. The executive director of this clinic, called the Neuromotor Research Clinic, said the idea is for children from around the world to be treated at the clinic with high-intensity therapy.

To understand the initiatives of the clinic, one must first look at cerebral palsy and the symptoms of the disorder.

Cerebral palsy is the term used to describe a group of conditions that typical lead to the impairment or loss of motor function and posture.

Cerebral palsy is caused by injury or abnormal development of the brain before, during or after birth. In some cases, this is caused by medical negligence during birth where the baby ends up not getting enough oxygen.

Cerebral palsy is also normally financially and emotionally draining for loved ones and can require lifelong medical care.

At this clinic, those with a weakness on one side of their body will go through a therapy limiting the use of their stronger arm and hand. The idea is this will encourage the use of the weaker side in order to further develop that arm and hand.

In addition to this therapy at the clinic, therapy will also continue on at home.

Throughout the process, the progress of 135 children will be followed.

Of course, this is promising news for those with cerebral palsy and the hope is this leads to improvements for everyone. However, one should know this is not a cure-all.

In general, when a child is born with cerebral palsy, parents are advised to look into what caused the condition. Did a medical professional make the wrong call during delivery? Was a cesarean section not ordered quick enough? Were signs of fetal distress ignored? Depending, there could be grounds to file a medical malpractice lawsuit.
