NYC Woman Commits Suicide Due to Hospital Staff’s Negligence

A woman committed suicide in NYC by jumping off a Midtown hotel in 2018 because she wasn’t provided adequate care by a city hospital. Jiawen Liu, a young Brooklyn resident, was found dead on the Wolcott Hotel’s second-story balcony after being discharged from the Bellevue Hospital just a few hours earlier.

According to NY Post, Liu had been brought to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after showing suspicious behavior and was allegedly discharged prematurely, leading to the eventual suicide. Her family has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital. Liu died because of the city hospital staff’s negligence and carelessness, the lawsuit filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court alleges.

How the Event Unfolded

Liu, originally of Chinese descent, had moved to NYC to study film and was supervising Chinese exchange students in her spare time. The 23-year-old had been behaving “erratically” in close vicinity to the Wolcott Hotel on that fateful night in Aug. 2018 and was brought to Bellevue Hospital to be put under psychiatric care.

According to reports, several of Liu’s friends arrived at the hospital but weren’t allowed to meet her. They were told to provide their contact details and “come back in the morning” because Liu was under evaluation. However, the hospital staff discharged Liu much earlier than anticipated. In their lawsuit, her family claims that the hospital staff showed great medical negligence by allowing the mentally unstable individual to leave the premises without informing any of her family members, friends, or caregivers.

After being discharged, Liu took an Uber to the Wolcott Hotel at 5:20 AM and eventually committed suicide by jumping off the rooftop. Her body was found just a couple of hours later. Her friends and family were left devastated by the incident and could only blame Bellevue Hospital

The medical malpractice attorney representing Liu’s parents stated that the entire fiasco could’ve been avoided if the hospital staff had cared enough to give the victim the medical attention she desperately needed. He also added that “a simple phone call” could have prevented Liu’s death.

Medical malpractice causes the death of dozens of people in NYC every year, besides injuring or creating severe health complications for hundreds of others. If you or one of your loved ones has suffered because of the negligence shown by medical professionals, you are entitled to file a lawsuit.

The Legal Aspect

Any medical complications or damages caused by medical malpractice entitles the victim to fair compensation. If the victim has died, as in Liu’s case, their family reserves the right to claim indemnification.

A qualified medical malpractice lawyer is bound to thoroughly investigate your case and bring forward the appropriate evidence for your claims. Cases of this sort can vary depending on the nature of the victim’s suffering, and it would be best to consult an attorney who has experience in handling lawsuits similar to yours.

Discuss your case with a seasoned medical negligence lawyer to determine if it is practicable to file a medical malpractice lawsuit.
