In the United States, more than 900 bicyclists were killed in accidents in 2013. There were an estimated 494,000 visits to hospital emergency departments across the country as a result of bicycle-related injuries. According to federal statistics, in 2012, the national rate of bicyclist deaths was roughly 2.3 deaths per 1 million. There were 722 deaths caused by bicycle accidents that same year. As per the estimates reported in the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses that was conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were nearly 3.0 million workplace illnesses and injuries in private industries in 2014. Of these, nearly 2.8 million, or 95.1%, were injuries. The BLS also reported that in 2009, more than 1.2 million workers missed days at work as a result of non-fatal injuries from industrial accidents.
