About 9,500 people are hospitalized each year as a result of injuries sustained from dog bites. In 2016, 31 fatalities related to dog bites occurred in the US. Pit bulls and Rottweilers, the second most dangerous dog breed, together accounted for 77% of the total deaths recorded in the same year.
