Although surgery has innate risks, people expect that physicians and other medical professionals will do all they can to prevent a surgical error from happening. Sadly, a mistake during a recent surgery left one New York woman dead.

The 41-year-old woman, and mother of three, was undergoing a kidney transplant surgery to donate the organ to her younger brother. During the surgery, the woman's aorta was cut. She bled to death on the operating room table. Even more tragic, her brother never received her kidney.

The hospital was able to find another kidney donor. However, the woman's brother is left grieving the death of his sister.

"She lost her life trying to save mine," the woman's brother said. "And that's really what is killing me every day."

The surgery was done at Montefiore Hospital. Since the woman's death, the hospital has halted its organ transplant program. In addition, the state health department has begun investigating the woman's death.

The 41-year-old woman is the first person to die in nearly four decades after undergoing organ transplant surgery at the hospital. However, that fact does little for the woman's family who must learn how to go on with their lives without her.

According to one source, the woman's family plans to pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit. When patients are harmed because of a doctor's negligence, they may be able to pursue compensation through a medical malpractice lawsuit. While no amount of money can make up for the tragic loss of life, it may provide the family with a sense of justice.
