The number of people with oral or oropharyngeal cancer is going up, probably due to an infection caused by a virus known as HPV (human papilloma virus). An estimated 9,570 deaths – 6,910 men and 2,660 women – will occur as a result of these two diseases.

Tonsils are part of the human immune system and are found at the back of the throat. They come in three types which all work to fight infections. The pharyngeal tonsils, also known as adenoids, are located at the back of the throat. The lingual tonsils are at the base of the throat while the palatine tonsils are on the sides. The type of cancer that is contracted depends on which tissue produces cancer cells. Tonsil or throat cancer can affect any part of the tonsils as well as the base of the soft palate and tongue.

Misdiagnosis of Tonsil Cancer

If you visit a physician with symptoms that are indicative of tonsil cancer, the physician will generally conduct an examination of your nose and throat to find out if there is a tumor. They will also check if the tumor has spread into the ears and nose.

X-rays and blood tests come next to find out if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, etc. The physician may also use another diagnostic method, such as a fine needle aspiration biopsy in which tumor cells are suctioned through a needle inserted into the mouth. These cells are then checked under a microscope for any signs of cancer.

Any type of cancer needs to be treated as quickly as possible, and it is no different with tonsil cancer. If the cancer is early-stage carcinoma, induction chemotherapy or radiation therapy might be used to shrink the tumor. If it is advanced tonsil cancer, surgery may be required before chemotherapy and radiation.

It is vital to diagnose any type of cancer properly. Most cancers, including tonsil cancer, will spread if the patient is not given quick and proper treatment. Unfortunately, many physicians make the error of misdiagnosing tonsil cancer as adenoiditis or tonsillitis, which are two less serious illnesses. If the cancer is misdiagnosed or is not treated promptly or at all, it can result in serious complications or even death.
