New York City motor vehicle accident attorneys provide representation to auto accident victims who wish to seek compensation for crash losses. Unfortunately, obtaining compensation can become more difficult after a hit-and-run accident unless the driver is identified.
Hit-and-run accidents often leave motorists facing serious injury with no driver to hold accountable for damages. CBS Local New York reported recently on a hit-and-run which left nine people injured and police searching for the driver of the vehicle responsible.
New York Police Search for Hit-and-Run Driver Who Caused Harm
According to CBS Local New York, the chain of events leading to the recent hit-and-run accident that caused nine injuries began when a driver stole a white Mercedes. The driver took the vehicle in North Bergen, New Jersey and he subsequently drove the car into New York.
At just after 1:00 AM, the stolen Mercedes began speeding with no headlights on along the eastbound side of the Belt Parkway. The Mercedes struck the back of a four-door sedan which was driven by a 59-year old. In the sedan, there was also a 33-year old woman along with three children between the ages of four and eight.
The Mercedes hit the back of the sedan so hard, the sedan hit a gray Mitsubishi SUV that was carrying four adults. The 59-year-old sedan driver was in critical condition and had to be rushed to the hospital. The children who had been in the sedan also had to be taken to the hospital, along with the 33-year-old woman, all of whom were treated and subsequently released.
The driver of the Mercedes who had caused the multi-vehicle accident continued to drive after striking the other vehicles and causing the accident. When the Mercedes driver crashed the stolen car into a concrete wall, he fled from the scene of the accident on foot.
Police are currently looking for the driver. If the driver is discovered and there is proof he was the motorist who caused the crash, victims of the accident who were seriously hurt could potentially seek compensation from the hit-and-run driver. However, it is possible that the driver would not have auto insurance or assets to cover their losses, as happens frequently in hit-and-run cases.
If a victim of a hit-and-run is not able to pursue a claim against the driver because the driver cannot be found, or if the hit-and-run driver had no automobile insurance to cover the losses sustained by crash victims, those who were hurt in the accident will need to explore their other options for obtaining compensation for crash damages.
New York motor vehicle accident attorneys can provide help to victims in looking into options like making an underinsured or uninsured motorist claim with their own insurer. It is important to contact an attorney for help as soon as possible, especially in hit-and-run cases which may have added complications.
